Quality Eye Care You Can Count On

Eye strain is a common issue that can develop if your eyes spend too much time doing visually demanding work, like reading, writing, or driving. If you work with devices quite a bit, you may also develop what’s known as digital eye strain, or computer vision syndrome, which stems from particular factors like:

  • Screen height
  • Screen brightness
  • Workplace ergonomics
  • Room lighting

Other issues that may contribute to symptoms include uncorrected refractive errors, dry eye, and eye function issues. Having an eye exam can help determine what may be causing your eye discomfort and guide us towards creating a treatment right for you.

Managing Your Symptoms

Despite the name, digital eye strain symptoms do not just affect your eyes. While the issue may cause irritation, blurry vision, wateriness, and general discomfort, it can also contribute to:

  • Headaches
  • Neck and shoulder pain
  • Concentration problems

When you come in for your eye exam, we can develop a treatment or management strategy that is right for you and your needs. In some cases, we may prescribe lenses to help correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, and presbyopia, or we may ask you to make some slight adjustments to your workspace or lifestyle to minimize the risk of these issues.

The 20/20/20 Rule

Sometimes the most effective answer is also the simplest.

If you periodically struggle with digital eye strain, try taking regular breaks every 20 minutes for at least 20 seconds, and look at something about 20 feet away.

This method, known as the 20/20/20 rule, can help give your eyes a chance to blink and readjust before getting back to work.

Changing how you sit at your desk can make a huge difference in your eye comfort. To reduce the risk of digital eye strain, make sure you:

  • Set your screen about an arm’s length away and just below eye level
  • Can rest your feet flat on the floor and sit with a straight back
  • Remove light sources that could cause glare
  • Have appropriate room lighting

Eye drops can also provide you relief from irritating eye strain issues, but we recommend having an eye exam first before trying any over-the-counter products.

Our team can help you find an eye drop suitable for your unique needs.
