What Can Laser Eye Surgery Offer You?

At River City Vision Center, we understand how vital your vision and eye health is to your quality of life. While prescription lenses or medications may help correct certain issues, sometimes you want a more permanent answer to your ocular concerns.

This is why we offer entirely comprehensive laser eye surgery consultations to help determine if procedures like LASIK and LPI surgery can help serve your vision and eye health needs.

All you need to do is book an appointment, and we can help with the rest.

Our Process

Consultations are unique eye exam processes that help determine your candidacy for laser eye surgery. While many people can have laser procedures safely, specific issues may affect your candidacy. Some of these issues include:

  • Dry eye
  • Eye diseases
  • Frequent eye infections
  • Environmental concerns
  • Thin corneas
  • Certain medications

We will take an in-depth look at your eye health and vision during the consultation and see how eye surgery could help improve your vision. If you are not a candidate for laser eye surgery, we may recommend an alternative strategy.

What We Consult

There are 2 types of laser eye surgeries we consult for: LASIK (laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis) and LPI (laser peripheral iridotomy). While both use lasers, they address very different issues.

We may recommend LASIK surgery if you are interested in correcting a refractive error like nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism. However, if you are at risk of developing primary angle-closure glaucoma, we may recommend LPI surgery.

Learn more about how angle-closure glaucoma develops by visiting our Eye Disease Diagnosis & Management page.

LASIK Eye Surgery

LASIK eye surgery is one of the most common refractive procedures in the world. The surgery can help correct your refractive error by changing the shape of your cornea, which could help refract light more clearly on the retina.

During the procedure, an ophthalmologist numbs your eye with a specialty eye drop before making a small incision in the outermost layer of your retina. By creating a flap in this layer, your surgeon can reshape the corneal tissue underneath using an excimer laser. At the end of the surgery, the flap is placed back in its original position and left to heal.

Primary angle-closure glaucoma is a serious eye disease that may develop suddenly and cause rapid symptoms like eye pain, redness, nausea, and vision loss. By observing your eye’s natural drainage angle, doctors can determine if it could risk closing and cause these symptoms.

If you risk developing this disease, we may recommend LPI surgery.

During the procedure, your surgeon will numb your eyes with specialty eye drops that will also help constrict your pupil before performing the rest of the surgery. From here, your surgeon will use a laser device to create a small hole in your iris, creating another channel for fluids in your eye to flow. As a result, your risk of developing angle-closure glaucoma can decrease.
